002 Life formulas (even if you’re not a math nerd)

formulas are used to create some of the most complex math problems, some of the most vital medications. And today, I'm going to share how you can use them to change your emotions and help your teams do the same. Are you a leader trying to get more from your business in life? Me too. So join me as I document the conversations, stories and advice to help you achieve what matters in your life. Welcome to unbound with me, Chris DuBois. Hello, everyone, and welcome to unbound where today we are talking about life formulas, right? super confusing if you don't know what we're actually talking about. And I will get into that. But first, I want to talk about how we have a responsibility as leaders to make things simple. We need to take all of these crazy elements and assets and different things going on, right. And we need to take the complex and make it simple. Right, some of the best CEOs are also some of the best salespeople, because if you can take, you can sell simplicity, right? If you can take something super complex, and make it super simple, it is much easier to sell. And sales isn't just about taking a product and getting money for it. Right? It's the same as if you're working with your team. And being able to sell them on an idea, sell them on a vision, and to get them moving in a direction that you feel unique getting their buy in, in order to do that, right. So we have that responsibility to make things simple. These life formulas, was one of my ideas for actually just capturing all the different ways that people are bringing up emotions, they're bringing up challenges, how can I simplify these things? So that when I'm talking to someone and trying to coach, you know, my team through this, it feels very simple for them. And they're, they're more able to just get after it much quicker. Right? So if someone shows up for my team, and they say, Hey, I'm feeling overwhelmed, right, the wrong response is, well, don't feel overwhelmed. So obviously, that doesn't do anything. Right. There's other people who are gonna say, this isn't so hard. But that just means you're not being empathetic. And it's just putting that person further off, because they're not being heard. And don't get me wrong, there are times where you have to say shut up in color. Right? We don't have time for you to complain about this, we don't have time for you to question these things, we just got to get it done. And now it's on you to sell the importance of of making that happen, right. But for the most part, when someone shows up, and they say, Hey, I'm feeling overwhelmed, it's actually really easy to talk about that. And so I grabbed four different life formulas that I use, I'm going to talk through these briefly. But first one is case you had didn't guess it overwhelm, right. So if you are feeling overwhelmed, it's because of two things you have high demands, and a lack of clarity. And so you need to tackle both of those things, if you want to be able to feel less overwhelmed. Now the first one high demands, it is very hard to reduce demands within an organization. Because you've given someone these tasks, because you need them done. Alright, and maybe you have put too many tasks on someone's plate, and you do need to actually back off, and, you know, take some stuff from them in order for them to catch their breath and be able to actually tread water for a bit. But for the most part, people aren't gonna even get a look at reducing those demands. It's one of the reasons why you have to look at your eight players, and make sure they're not doing this themselves are not taking on too many things, and actually drowning themselves, right, but so you have high demands, and you can lower those demands that will let you feel less overwhelmed. And also the lack of clarity, right? A lot of times you're overwhelmed, because you don't know what you should be doing. You're not prioritizing that. You just when you look at everything in front of you, there's no clear next step. And so if you can give your team some clarity around what they should be working on right now, then it's going to be much easier for them to actually get after it. And I had one team member who just had some anxiety, challenges. And he just pre brought up, hey, I'm feeling overwhelmed. I got this and this and this. I'm like, Alright, let's talk overwhelm is high demands plus a lack of clarity. So let's talk about it, man. See too many projects on your plate right now. Is it too hard for you to actually keep up with the workload? It's like, no, it's like, I should have time. Like, okay, well, if that's not the problem, then it's the lack of clarity. So let's talk about prioritizing your workload. Let me help you look through everything you got. And we can make a plan to actually get after it and we finished the conversations like man, you made this feel so easy. And I'm like, boom, that is exactly what I'm going for with this. Right? So that's that's overwhelmed. That is a super easy way for you to go to your team when they are feeling stressed because they feel like they have too much on their plate to just pull them aside, say, Hey, check it out. This is what overwhelmingness time demands and a lack of clarity. Let's talk through this. Right? Okay, next one productivity, how can you become more productive, and you can go find tons and tons of books. But this is personal, someone can argue it if they want. But this has worked for me, it is having high stakes plus a strong purpose times energy that you're putting into it. Right. So if there are high stakes, you are going to get it done. A lot of times high stakes for people just means there's a deadline coming up. Right? How many people are procrastinating to the point where like, this project is due tomorrow. And so they they finally put it in and get it done? Right, because that stake was high enough now that it actually motivated them to be more productive. Now, you can also have a strong purpose, right? Just knowing like, Hey, I with I have so much passion around this mission, right, that is going to drive you to be more productive. And now you can add those together to get a great output. And then if you multiply those by the energy you're bringing to the table, right, it doesn't matter how high stakes something is, or how much of a mission is if you haven't slept for a week, right? Because you're just you're miserable, maybe you haven't been eating well, you have been exercising, you're sick, right? There's all these different things that are going to sap your energy, just your mood is in there, it is really hard to become productive, if you're not showing up with energy. And so that is productivity, right? In parentheses, you have high stakes plus strong purpose, then outside you have times energy. Next growth, super simple one, right growth equals knowledge times execution. Right, you cannot grow unless you are learning things. So go grab the books, I will do an episode at some point on the gift of going second. Because I truly believe that it's something that we all need to take more advantage of. Not enough people reading books, not enough people like listening to actual podcast episodes of people trying to get stuff done and giving you advice to help you move further because they have already done it. And so we'll talk about later, but right now, right growth equals knowledge times execution. And so for the knowledge, it could be reading a book, it could be doing podcasts, right? It could also be trying things and then learning from your mistakes or learning from your successes, right? Doing an after action review writing down the notes. What did I do that worked here, right and keeping a log of these things? Okay, well, what was the best next step, and you set these hypotheses around what you expect to happen. So now you're not just doing something randomly, right, you're actually doing something in the hopes that you are going to learn more from it. And then you multiply that knowledge by execution by that ability to actually go do the thing, right? If you just collect all this knowledge, and you will see tons of people doing this, right. They're pulling in all this knowledge, and they can sit and they can talk to you may sound super smart, but they haven't actually done anything. I have interviewed hundreds of people for different positions within different companies and teams. And if there's one thing I've learned is that 10 years of experience does not always equal 10 years of experience, a lot of times it equals one year of experience 10 times. And so and that's because people just keep doing the same thing. They're not actually learning, they're not actually executing, they're just doing the same thing that they do every day. So they might be really good at doing that one thing, hopefully, they're applying some of that knowledge and getting really good at that critical skill, for the most part, right, you're not getting results you're not, you're not actually growing, because you're not taking knowledge and not multiplying it by the ability to execute in order to grow. So that is growth, growth equals knowledge times execution, right. So overwhelm equals high demands, plus a lack of clarity. Productivity is high stakes, plus a strong purpose times your energy growth, knowledge times execution. And the last one we're going to talk about is confidence. Now, this one is a lot of angst a lot of times, especially working with our marketing company, a lot of team members when they have to present something to a client, a new campaign strategy, they have to, they just created a wireframe and they have to be able to present this, right if it's the first time they're doing it, they're not feeling super confident, they're getting nervous, they're getting worried and that's where they start slipping up and they say things they shouldn't in the meeting, because they're just trying to fill that gap of silence, right. So, confidence or to get it requires two things competence and clarity. Okay, competence means having proof that you have done this before, right, knowing exactly what it is the more reps you can get on doing something, the more confident you become. Because you just understand it, you've done it before you can look back on these experiences and say, I've knocked this out before, this isn't that hard, it's not that big of a deal, right, and you have learned some things. And then when you add the clarity to that, right, a lot of when you are faced with the unknown, you're not going to be confident. If I tell you, Hey, you have to make it, you know, across the woods, you've just walk across these woods in the middle of the night, and you have to show up at this exact location, you don't have a white, you don't have a carpet, like, you don't know what's in the woods with you. Alright, a lot of people are gonna be nervous or scared of the unknown. And they're just not going to get there, then that might be crappy example, don't care. It's the idea that you don't know any of the things between point A and point B, right? You just know what you have to what you have to do. But now imagine if I gave you a like, I gave you a map, I gave you a compass, I gave you a GPS, right? It gives you all of these things, you know exactly what's going to happen, you know exactly how to get there, you're gonna feel way more confident about this. And so if you can add clarity and competence, it is very easy to gain confidence. So Okay, those are just four of the life formulas I have. If you want to talk to me about some of the other ones, feel free to reach out. shoot me a message. And I will happily share any of these you can also go to Chris Dubois dot U S, and I put up a bunch of the life formulas that I use, I just posted those in a sheet in notion so that other people can go, you can use them, I grabbed some from other people, I'm trying to credit others. So if you see some that we should add to the list, let me know we'll get them added. We'll put your name on the board and you can keep adding these. But this is a great resource for leaders to be able to turn something very complex, something that people just don't understand, right. A lot of people don't understand their feelings, their emotions, they don't know why they're thinking certain things. So if we can take that complexity and make it very simple, then we can actually get more from our teams. They can be happier, they can be getting the job done faster, right, they're going to be more motivated, it's only going to do good things. So if you learned something today, I would love to hear about it if you want to just like screenshot the episode and paste that with whatever lesson you learned, I would love that. Otherwise, please leave a rating and review. While I would love five stars. I don't care. I want to hear what you actually think about this so we can get better. So ideally, give me a five star, but if you don't, it's not gonna break my heart, right? Been through much worse things. Besides that, have yourself a great day. Keep getting after it and make sure to deserve it.
